How & where can I get tax return copies that I filed when i lived with him?

My x husband did our tax papers on line and never learned. I need the papers so I can get a fee waiver in college. My x will never give me those at all I don't live with him. Where can I get the copies?

  1. you can request them from the irs and/or state tax board. they do charge a fee, california charges 20.00 per year's copy and can only go back 3 years  


  2. You can obtain a copy through your local IRS office or by calling 1-800-TAX-1040.  If your name is on the taxes (which it is), then you are entitled to a copy by virtue of you being the spouse at the time.

  3. The IRS can provide copies or a transcript - the transcript would probably be accepted by your school.  See http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html

  4. The IRS will give them to you if your name is on them. There is a fee. Try 1-800-829-1040, and be very patient.

    In some states (Wisconsin for one) the federal tax needs to be attached to the state tax. You could also ask the state, and sometimes they charge less (Wisconsin does).
