How/where can I learn how to play poker quick?

  1. Learning how to be good at poker will not be quick.  Learning the rules of poker is one things, learning to be good at it takes a lifetime.  However, there are basic guidelines for ALL forms of poker that you can learn quickly to benefit your game.

    1) Play tight.  For the most part, you want to start with the best hand to get your percentages in your favor from the get go.  If you don't have the best hand, you should have a big draw that will likely make you the best hand.  Drawing to a single pair usually isn't a winning play.

    2) Be aggressive.  Being aggressive by betting instead of calling gives you 2 ways to win.  You can either make everyone else fold, or have the best hand.  If you just keep calling all the way, you can only win by having the best hand.

    3) Know your opponents.  Advice given for playing against experts are counterproductive against novices and vice versa.  Know your opponent and what he or she is capable of.
