Question:

How/where do I report finding a tagged homing pidgeon?

I'm currently located at the Polly Bemis Ranch on the Salmon River in Idaho and I noticed a brightly colored, very well kept, pigeon hanging around for quite awhile. We noticed he had tags on he claws so we grabbed him and got the numbers off of them. I was just curious to know if there is a website or phone number where I could report the bird's location, and if there isn't any official website a good pigeon message board would be helpful. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. There are several pigeon clubs, depending on location.

If the bird is wearing two bands - it's a racing pigeon, who did not make it back the loft - he's AWOL.

The bird may be injured, or simply exhausted.  Unless the pigeon is injured and flightless, you can leave it outdoors. They usually just need a little rest before continuing home.

Or, you could offer a little help.

Water would be a good idea.  Use a heavy coffee mug, or other container that is at least 2" deep. Splash clean fingers in it, so the bird knows that it's water.

Pigeons eat grain. Plain bagged unpopped (non-microwavable) popcorn, or green split peas from your grocery store work well. Just put them in a shallow dish.

Since you have already captured the bird, you can put it in a largish pet carrier or cardboard box, or even under a laundry basket, with newspaper on the bottom.  Keep it in a well lit area.

Here are more instructions, and a link to find the owner.

Best of luck to you, and thanks for helping the bird!
