  1. The French came out second-best in the 7 Years War (1756-63) - their army was humiliated by Frederick the Great at Rossbach while a colonial struggle with Britain ended with the loss of Canada, as well as defeats in India and the West Indies. Louis wanted to reverse these losses and to have Britain and its American colonies at war was a dream come true for the French. Before France officially entered the war in 1778 it had supplied the Americans with huge cash subsidies and other military equipment, including many cannon and enough muskets to 'standardise' the Continental Army's small arms - an important improvement for an army where every regiment previously contained weapons of dozens of different calibres. After France entered the war openly the French Navy and Army sent troops to America to play a direct role in the conflict, although the French priority in the area was the West Indies (as, indeed, was Britain's). While the importance of French forces ( as opposed to their supplies) through most of the war is disputed, not least by the American commanders who regularly scapegoated them, it was the decisive French victory at Yorktown in 1781 that removed any last chance of Britain hanging on to the colonies.

  2. Partially for revenge against England, only 13 years after France lost North America to England in the 1756-1763 Seven Years' War.

  3. Many reasons to include the results of the Seven Years War.

In December, 1775,  Congress is informed that France may offer support in the war against Britain.

May 1776, King Louis XVI of France commits one million dollars in arms and munitions.

September 26, 1776 - Congress appoints Jefferson, Franklin and Silas Deane to negotiate treaties with European governments. Franklin and Deane then travel to France seeking financial and military aid.
