How will Garth Mulroy fare at Joburg Open in 2012?
Garth Mulroy, who earned his PGA Tour card for the 2012 season, has made up his mind that he will continue to play on the European Tour in the current year.
The 33-year-old South African golfer decided to remain with the European Tour because of his triumph at the Won BMW Charity Pro-Am in 2011, his first victory on the Tour.
Garth Mulroy kicked off the 2012 season by participating in the Africa Open in the first week of January. The event was scheduled from January 5 to 8, 2012.
In the Africa Open, South African players were seen outclassing their opponents throughout the tournament.
Keeping in view the stats of the past tournaments, fans had already pinned hopes on their favourite South African players.
Conversely, Mulroy was seen displaying an average game on the field. He carded a 13-under 279 and shared the 34th spot on the leaderboard with six other players.
The tournament has now finished and Mulroy is now getting ready to participate in the second European Tour event of the year, the Joburg Open, in the second week of January, 2012.
The event featuring leading South African players will be played at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, Johannesburg, South Africa.
He now has a bigger tournament ahead of him. Unlike Africa Open, the Joburg Open will feature a large number of top-ranked players from all over the world. However, Mulroy will have the home soil advantage in the tournament.
Nonetheless, despite the home course advantage, he was unable to perform well in the Africa Open. Golf experts believe that it may be due to the pressure of the season-opener. He may perform differently in the second event.
On the other hand, it is also believed that similar things can happen this time too, as the event is being held in the very next week of the Africa Open.
If his stats for the 2011 season are analysed, he was in good form, recording two wins, one on the Sunshine and European Tour and the other in BMW Charity Pro-Am, which is not sanctioned by any of the tours.
Because of his remarkable performance in 2011, much is expected from him in 2012 too, especially in the events to be played in South Africa.
He also played in some of the PGA events last year, which should have given him some experience to learn putting skills and how to stay out of difficult situations.
Without a doubt, Mulroy has what it takes to outshine his opponents in the Joburg Open and record his first victory of the season. The South African seems to have warmed up by participating in the Africa Open.
Now, he has the ability to effectively turn most of the crucial factors in the Joburg Open in his favour.
However, he will have to make the most of his stroke-play and try to calculate his shots critically. This can help him to be more accurate and consistent throughout the tournament.
Moreover, he will have to improvise according to the situations in all the rounds he will play.
There will be other top-notch South African players playing against him. Therefore, he will have to be more careful and precise while selecting his shots.
One can expect anything from Mulroy, as his playing techniques and stats support him, making him one of the favourites for recording a win in the event.
