  1. From one note to the very next note will always be a half step.

  2. Do to Do sharp is a half step.  Anytime you sharp a note, you're raising it a half step.   Anytime you flat a note, you're lowering it a half step.

C D E F G E B C -- there are whole steps in between each two notes EXCEPT for E to F, which is a natural half step, and B to C, which is a natural half step.  There is no note between E and F or between B and C.

So C to D is a whole step with a half step (C#/Db) in between; D to E is a whole step with a half step (D#/Eb) in between; F to G is a whole step with a half step (F#/Gb) in between; G to A is a whole step with a half step (G#/Ab) in between; A to B is a whole step with a half step (A#/Bb) in between.

Besides which, if you pay attention and listen carefully, you will learn to recognize the sound of a whole step vs a half step interval.

I'm not very up on the Do Re Mi etc, but I can say that if you're going from a note to the sharp of that note, it's a half step. A sharp (or a flat) is a distance of one half step.
