How will Republicans tolerate McCain on global warming?

"Global warming is REAL!" The man says in a huge firm voice. "It is time to stop pretending and time to address it."

He then goes on to prescribe ethanol and nuclear power.

It's a position that has many Repblicans, who hate Al Gore and the horse he rode in on puzzled.

But he is emphatic. What he proposes to do about it... well that's not all that clear, but I have yet to see a substantial McCain speech where

pleading with Republicans to face the facts of climate change is not featured.

With denial of the warming trend and its relationship with our current wave of severe weather at the heart of so much anti-democrat rhetoric,

how do Republicans feel about this aspect of McCain's platform.

I invite all Republicans to respond, and thank them for taking the time.

I expect the usual anti-Gore people to chirp up... go ahead. It only underlines why this is an issue.

  1. Global warming is the biggest hoax ever played on mankind, man trying to wrestle with the weather now, has changed from time to time since the beginning and I dont care how much tax money you throw at it, it will continue to change.

  2. It's not about Gore's scare tactics on global warming. It's about being stewards of our planet and taking care of it because it's the right thing to do. Not because of chicken little cries that the sky is falling when many understand only 3% of all CO2 is made by humans. The rest is natural by product of decomposing vegetation and volcanoes.

  3. Do you think that environmental issues are the sole domain of the Democrats?

Are you aware that in 2000 McCain sponsored legislation that would have capped C)2 emissions at 1990 levels.

Just because we think Gore is an idiot and overstates Global warming doesn't mean that conservatives don't want to act.

You argument seems to say that if you don't believe that Global warming is man made, then you don't believe in global warming. That's ridiculous

  4. Maybe if Global Warming is real.... lets face the facts... it's Global Climate Change... why? becuase we will plunge into an ice age before we burn... :/

Oh and Al Gore is an idiot journalist graduate that took 1 ecology class... hardly constitutes him as an expert... and you do realize his "inconvienant truth" is full of fallacy and lies... even UK doesn't want it taught in their schools (last I heard)... and his Carbon credits... yeah it's a scam.... He pretty much has a piece of the carbon credit pie.. and a big one at that.. :/

  5. I think most Republicans acknowledge anthropogenic global warming as either fact of at least sound theory.

The denialists are only a small minority who , like most extremists, are very vocal.

  6. Mosty republicans like myself believe in global warming.  Most are skeptical of the projections and point out, the only real fix would be nuclear energy.

What I do not want is a government who over reacts and actually causes more harm than good.  I will outline my case below I think you will be suprised.

Since 1880 the temperature has warmed about .6 deg C +/- .2 deg C accoriding to the IPCC.

Co levels have gone from 200-240 ppm to 300-315 ppm.

The equation is 6.3*LN(Cn/Co)  Note we are 45% of the way to doubling.

Prior to 1940 CO2 could only account for .05 deg C of the .25 deg C temperature rise.

That means .2 deg C was most likely natural.

If you rin the IPCC calculation you get a temperature change from CO2 of about .4 deg C.

Other greenhouse gasses account for a small rise of about .05 deg C

Add this up you get .2 deg C natural .45 deg C greenhouse.  Or .65 deg Temperature change.

We are almost half the way to doubling the effect due to the 6.3 equation.

If the estimate is the +.2 and we have had a .8 deg C temperature change at 2100 of .45*2+.15*2 (positive feedback).    A change of 1.2 deg C.  About 1 deg C warmer than today.

If we take the temperature estimate at .6 deg C.  You get about .8 deg C rise to global warming. About .4 deg higher than today. (remember natural of .2 already included.

If we take it at the -.2 we get a .4*2+(-.2)*2=or a .4 dec C change.  About .2 than today

The upper estimate does require some change but average and the lower does not.  I have heard some propents say that the earth is behind in its heating effect.  Were is that energy being stored?  Remeber if it is the Oceans they figure in the surface temperature.

To sumarize if we can only publis a +/-.2 deg C, we have a case for some change, but not drastic change that will harm more people due to starvation.

  7. global warming natural process or man made it's not a bad thing to work on being better humans and helping the earth be more healthy. that being said everything has to be contemplated for the big picture. We can't stop progress being made on alternative fuels or even offshore drilling because of conservation. It can't be one extreme or the other we have to find a happy medium.

  8. I think even the most die hard people now realize we have to do something to stop the Global warming madness and energy crisis. Global warming is an important issue, but if given a choice, most people would take energy independence first. McCain has laid out plans , as has Obama. However, what makes me scratch my head is Obama says he can do it without added coal, drilling, nuclear power or natural gas. All that is left is Corn, WInd, Sun. And I don't think we are anywhere near being able to run the Country on just those three sources. So, how does he plan to do it? McCain wants to use ALL sources to get us energy free. Sounds like a more realistic plan to me.
