How will Scat Daddy do in the Derby?

Question

Since Edgar Prado (Barbaro's jockey) is the jockey for Scat Daddy will that help or hurt his chances or have no effect? Will Prado be emotional and turn it up a notch with Scat Daddy or will it be a disadvantage?

I don't think he will do well, he likes to stalk, way too many horses in the field for that, his beyer figures are below 100 and he is coming off a layoff although in the past he hasn't had a problem with it, Derby winners don't come off layoffs.

First I'll address his name for the first answerer to the question.  Scat Daddy was named by the owner's son.  Their last name is Scatuorchio.  So take the first 4 letters of their name along with the fact that the kid is naming his Daddy's horse...  and you have Scat Daddy.  I hated his name until I understood how he got it and now I like it because it's kinda creative and that's exactly what a little kid would do to name a horse.

Then let me address the layoff.  Scat Daddy and about 6 other horses are coming off layoffs.  Most of the horses who had the traditional race 2, 3, or 4 weeks before the Derby this year are the 50-1 horses including Teuflesberg, Dominican, Zanjero, and others.  Last year Barbaro proved that you can win the Derby off a 5 week layoff.  Some of the other horses this year who have better morning line odds are coming off layoffs longer than this: Circular Quay is 8 weeks, Hard Spun is 6 or 7 weeks.  Some of the strongest horses in this race are coming off layoffs this year, so I don't think we can rule Scat Daddy out for the layoff.

Johannesburg was better at shorter distances, but I think this colt likes the distance.  I don't think we can say this horse can't handle the distance when in his last 4 starts, he's done the best (won the races in fact) at the 2 longest distances.  The only race he hasn't won this year was 8 furlongs: 1 mile.  I think we can see significant improvement from his BC Juve showing and from the Holy Bull...  and i think Scatty's ready to peak in the Derby.

Personally I think Scat Daddy will be in the money or just outside...  no worse than 5th.  He'll make a strong run down the stretch, but there's other horses who might be able to catch him (Circular Quay, Hard Spun, Curlin(if he's good enough for a Grade I field), maybe Street Sense).  Scatty will be a strong contender for sure.  He's facing suspect competition??  Look at his last races...  he beat Nobiz twice, Stormello twice this year, he beat Notional who was the best contender Doug ONeill had...  and if you look at the Florida Derby, you can see that they could have run the extra eighth mile and Notional wasn't going to catch and beat Scatty.

If Scatty is facing suspect competition, then so was Nobiz...  he ran the Wood against Any Given Saturday, but other than that, he's been right there with Scatty this season...  if we're giving so much credit to Nobiz, then Scatty gets the same.  And I actually think facing Notional would have been more challenging than facing Any Given Saturday who came into the Wood so soon off of that Tampa Bay Derby sprint to the finish.

About Edgar...  I love that he's riding Scatty.  I much preferred how Edgar rode this horse in the Florida Derby to how John Velazquez had been riding him before...  Even comparing Scatty's run in the Florida Derby to his win in the Fountain...  he managed to win both races, but the Florida Derby was just a much better run.

observe how Velazquez allows Scatty to break to about 3rd, but has him about 4 wide on the first turn, so Scatty falls back to 3rd-to-last.  Then he has a 3 wide trip all the way around the track.  And they get to the stretch and he waits just about until the very last minute to ask the horse to run up to the lead.  You can see Scatty accellerate when Velazquez finally asks him.  Fortunately it was just enough for the win...  but given a better trip, Scatty might have had an easy victory with a length or 2 between him and Stormello.

Edgar breaks to about 3rd...  he's right along the rail, then switches to the outside so Scatty won't get boxed in.  He stays tucked in in third to fourth...  he stalks the pace.  Then Edgar asks Scatty around the last turn so that Scatty is going to the lead at the top of the stretch instead of waiting to finish the turn, start down the stretch, and decide then that 'gee, i'd better ask my horse to go now if he's gonna win.'

I think Edgar will very much help Scatty.  He knows how to handle a big field and how to maneuver a horse through it.  He can put Scatty right where he needs to be and he knows when to ask him to turn it on.

I don't think Edgar's emotion will matter at all.  First, how many races has he ridden since the Preakness... and even since the end of January?  I think he's had time to adjust.  And even if he is emotional because of returning to the Derby, Edgar is very professional and won't let it affect him at all.  He's gonna give his mount his full attention and do exactly what the horse needs.

Scat Daddy deserves so much more attention that what he gets.  He's had strong performances and yet everyone ranks him around 5th on their Derby picks.  but i guess that's always the way...  the favorite never wins anyway.  It's always that 5th pick guy who comes and surprises everyone and gets all the attention in the Preakness.

Unless Prado gets so emotional he grows wings and flies Rat Daddy to the finish line he ain't got a chance (I probably just jinxed myself and he will s***w all my tickets).  Like a few others have already stated he's too slow and been facing some suspect competition down in FLA, he is by the over-bred over-rated Johannesburg whose horses are better suited for a mile and under, he's already pushed his distance limitations.

Edger Prado is a professional, What happened on Barbaro will have no affect on how he rides this horse.  Scat Daddy is a very good horse, certainly a must use in your exotic bets.
