  1. i work with autistic children...i guess it depends on what type of autism your son has...it might very well help...maybe one of those small trampolines that is used for aerobics. The most important thing is to keep his muscles working and moving a lot.  For fine motor skills i would say using push pins, or clothes pins or tongs and trying to grab things and put them in a cup or something.  For gross motor I would say anything from drawing to cutting to going for a walk and pushing a baby stroller or kicking a ball.  Working with him and his doctor should answer more of your questions.  Hope this helps..please let me know if i can help more...

  2. A trampoline is going to help your child interpret his body and time through space, which is something that autistic children lack. For example, when your son does a jumping jack, this probably can be frustrating for him.  That is because ASD children lack this time/space ability. They dont know how there body moves in space. Not only will it help with that, but also it will provide the sensory motor break that is also helpful for children who have ASD. I am not sure what sorts of this spectrum disorder he exhibits but if your doc rec this then that is probably the reason.  The lady who mentioned the weighted objects is right on. I personally would also pursue his emotional well being as far as social situations is concerned. I am sure you are already aware. Good luck!

  3. I have 2 autistic spectrum sons.  We started off with a small 38" trampoline, and just recently upgraded to a 8' enclosed trampoline.  What jumping on a trampoline does is it helps organize the sensory system.  Most autistic kids have sensory issues and an OT helps them with this.  Jumping actually provides deep pressure and joint compressions to the legs.  Many autistic kids crave this, there are articles about weigh me down, hold me tight.  My sons use a weighted blanket, and we have ankle weights, medicine balls, and pressure vests, a ball pit with balls and weighted bean bags, a sit and spin, we have all kinds of sensory stuff.  The trampoline will help keep him calm and organized.  My nearly 3 year old even likes to sleep on it.  We have moved it indoors.  It is only 18" from the ground, I suggest one low to the ground if your son is young.  It is the best sensory item we have bought.  It does the most, and is good exercise and he won't grow out of it because the weight limit is 250 lbs.
