Depending on what Alternative energy is.

Alternative energy bio fuel from corn, sugar cane and Palm oil by clearing rain forest will NOT help the environment.

But using solar thermo energy and wind energy, it will reduce our impact on the environment.

burning carbon energy produces tones of carbon dioxide

nuclear energy produces radiation

hydro power plants destroys the eco-system in the environment

solar, wind and tidal are really the alternative energy that doesn't destroy or disturb the environment that much...

To add to the answer above, when we use wind/solar/geothermal power to produce energy for our homes, it reduces our demand on our local power grid. In turn this reduces the amount of fossil fuels burned at generation plants to produce energy for us.
