Question:

How will an airliner land if by chance the wheel carriage wont open?

This has happened many times and i remember a few years ago a singaporean airlines plane faced the same problem. After trying all he can still if the wheels wont come out how will the pilot land the plane and save the passengers?

  1. VERY carefully, after it has dumped or used up most of it's fuel.


  2. Pilots are trained for such emergencies. In a normal malfunction (yes, that is sort of an oxymoron) only one wheel unit would be affected, like the nose wheel or one of the two main gear units. In that case, the pilot can do a number of things.

    a.) make a hard touch and go on the runway with the remaining gear to try and loosen the stuck wheel carriage

    b.) try to manually open the door by use of another system inside the cockpit

    c.) land with a non-extended wheel unit

    The latter of these three is the most risky, but flight training and emergency workers are trained in risk management and fire prevention in these specific instances.

  3. Having been a flight attendant for 17 years.  They do have a hand  cranking device , and if that fails,  be prepared to land in foam!
