Im going to try out for volleyball and this is my first time ever playing! I'm 5'11'' and 13. I dont have any experience other than classes i've took in gym so I know how to bump set and spike! So how will they determine which position I'll play. Oh and how are positions assign if people are always switching?!?! Doesnt each player have to play all positions? i'm confused

  1. Since your so tall, you will probably be a middle hitter, because they are usually the big girls who can jump high to block.

You might also play back row, or they might put in someone smaller and generally more agile

Now, even though you rotate (switch) people always go to their home positions. So setters will always run to the right front, middles to the middle and outsides to the left as soon as possible, which is usually the first time the ball goes over the net

  2. Your position is usually based on your height and skills.  Since your already 5'11 at 13 which is every coaches dream your most definitely going to be a hitter.  Most likely you'll be a middle hitter which is responsible for a majority of the blocking and hitting.  If not you'll be either an outside hitter (which probably gets the most sets to hit) or a right side hitter (which also sets a lot of blocks).  But most likely you'll be a middle hitter.  Really they put you in a position much like they would in any sport.  They'd place you based on their experience and what they saw best.

as for players switching, you'll learn this at tryouts or soon after.  There are six players on the court that rotate after a point is lost and then won.  When the opposing team serves players are required to be in their place in "rotation".  However, once the ball goes back over the net, players go to their "base" which is the position that they normally play.  It all happens pretty quickly and might take you a little while to get used to and remember, but eventually you won't even have to think about it and you'll get used to it.  Once your coach teaches it to you, make sure you pay attention and ask questions if you need to.  Its always better to see it than read about it.  You'll learn everything you need to at tryouts just focus on the basics that they'll teach you like footwork and timing for hits.  Oh and be sure to call the ball ("Got It") when you're going for it, coaches like vocal players. Good Luck!
