this is a consensual fight (meaning ittl be legal) im 5'10' 190 lbs going to fight a 5'7' 135 lbs guy. all rules are UFC/MMA legal. my background is traditional kung fu with kickboxing and submission grappling although i have no head contact experience but i practice with my guard at my head. my opponent specializes in northern shaolin and a black belt in tae kwon do. he does flashy kicks that go to the head level and hes very fast at kicking and transitioning. how do i counter this? my plan is to set up for a takedown and knock him out from mount or go for an arm bar since hes light. should i be fighting in close since he kicks often? i need tips!

  1. It's legal?

I hope you guys have an ambulance standing by and a referee.  Do you have your license from your state board?  Do you have insurance?

This sounds like a couple of teen-aged boys being idiots.  I just hope that someone with some sense stops this before one or both of  you ends up hurt.

  2. Note:  Use this advice at your own risk.  Also, you outweigh the other person by a huge margin, so the fight is not fair.  Make sure the fight is conducted legally.  Even though you both agree to the match it may not be legal depending where you live.  Fighting at a dojo is probably the only way a fight of this nature is legal in the US.

    Advice:

Watch UFC 1 and 2 and you'll find your answer.  I call it the "Royce Gracie Method".  Maintain distance with side kicks to the opponent's leg.  It really does not matter if these land or do any damage, they are merely setting up a takedown.  When you find an opening, shoot for the takedown.  A clinch trip is probably the most effective and least risky.  Once the opponent is down, work for mount.  Once mounted, pepper the opponents head with either hammer fists or punches (preferably open palm -- don't break your hand).  Your opponent will probably turn over. Move for back position by getting your hooks in.  Go for the rear naked choke.

I would advise against the armbar from mount because it is a higher risk move.  If your opponent won't give you an opportunity to take the back, move to side mount and go for a kimura, key lock or straight arm bar.

If you absolutely cannot take your opponent down, pull guard and immediately work for a triangle choke.  If the triangle fails, move for an armbar.  If that fails, try a guillotine.

Important:  maintain distance until the takedown opportunity presents itself.

  3. target his thighs, inner thighs, and his ribs on his right hand side. his kicks are nothing if your close enough to him, but tae  kwon do kicks are bad at mid and far range, not because they're so hard, but because they are fast, but if they are tough enough you can use the bigger part of your forearms to block the kicks to the neck and head, and the large part of your shin to block body shots,

for those front kicks, you'll want to keep your arms together, just your whole forearms then raise a leg up depending on what side the kick is coming toward , for front kicks though you can sometimes dodge , if you pay attention they are easy to avoid,

basically, take up a ramon dekkers like style, go to youtube and look up ramon dekkers highlights and watch some of his videos, he is a muay thai fighter and the first foreigner  to be named thai fighter of the year in thailand.

what i love about his style is the way he kicks and how he blocks, but the best thing  is how he dodges leg kicks, he just breaks his legs sideways, its so funny!

    but anyway hope this helps

  4. My best advice...

    Never Back Down!!!!!!!!

  5. Shoot in close and quickly to get inside his legs.  Flow your way into your favorite positions as the fight permits.  Then, ground and pound.

  6. Agree with most.  Don't try to out-kick a kicker.  This is doubly true if you have a skill he doesn't have - such as grappling.

Shoot in to go to the ground.

  7. Even if it's consensual doesn't mean it's legal. Both of you could end up in jail if you fight in a public place.

He is a striker who is 55 lbs lighter than you, logic dictates you should grapple.

My suggestion is, to go to a gym or dojo, put on some gloves, and call it "sparring", under an instructor or sensei

    good luck!

  8. Why are you fighting someone 55lbs lighter than you?...that's not UFC/MMA rules. He's totally in a different weight class.

  9. Take it to the ground where your weight can be used to your advantage.

Submit him or ground and pound him.

all thatTae kwon do is pretty useless on the ground.

  10. Since he might be too tough for you, ask to fight his 5'0 100lb sister.

  11. You want to close fast and grapple with him if possible.  You have both a reach and weight advantage, but if he can keep you at range you're going to get hurt badly.  I'd willingly take a l**k to get my hands on him with as much disparity as there is between your weights.
