  1. the fish do not need to be removed during the weekly partial water change.

all you need to do is this:

    1. prepare the new water in one bucket, leave it for a few hours once you've added dechlorinator, let it warm up to room temperature at least, cold water can shock and kill tropical fish.

    2. turn off everything electrical in the tank such as filters and heaters.

    3. remove any large pieces of decor such as bogwood etc, carefully not to take out any fish with them! put them to one side.

    4. take a second bucket and a syphon, place the syphon in the tank, tip it up to ensure there is no air in it, shake it up and down to get the suction going, hold it at the base to shoo any curious fish away and fan the substrate to get rustle up the dirt. take out the same amount of water (usually 15%-20%) than what you have in the first bucket.

    5. once that's done, you can take out any filter media such as sponges and carefully rinse them in the old dirty tank water (never ever under a tap or in new water!) replace them and then carefully pour in the new water.

    6. put all the decor back, plug everything back in, and you're done!

my small tanks generally take me 10-15 minutes to do.

be sure to put your new tank through the nitrogen cycle before you add fish! also, angelfish need a minimum of a 30-35 gallon high for one.

  2. first i use a magnetic algae cleaner and clean around the tank( still with the water in the tank). i then empty about 1/2 of the water out, so the fish can still swim well. then i  take out the plants to wash, clean out the filter in the water i emptyed out the tank not from the tap. Then once everything is clean i add the water, plants, and filter back. remember: use water to condition the water, and leave enough water for the fish to swim when emptying water. Enjoy your fish.

  3. Catx is right. You leave the fish in the tank while performing 25% water changes weekly. NEVER take out all the water at once, it will kill your fish.

  4. You never take all the water out when you clean it.  You need to maintain the bacteria level and you don't what to shock the fish.  Every few weeks you should do about a 20-25% water change.  Take out about a quarter of the water and clean all of the ornaments in the tank and change your filters and all that stuff.  You also want to scrub the inside of the glass with a special scrubber you get at the pet store so it doesn't scratch.  Make sure you put chemicals in the tap water before you put it back in the aquarium to take out the ammonia, chlorine, and all that stuff.

  5. get a tank vacuum to pick the debris off the bottom, then you don't need to take the fish out.
