  1. Oh, you'll know. Many women experience leakage of the breast that isn't being nursed at the moment. When I nursed my son on one breast, the other would run like a faucet. If you're one of the lucky ones and your milk doesn't leak, you will know because of the sucking and swallowing noises and because your baby will be gaining weight and wetting many diapers a day (6-8).

  2. You can hear your baby drinking and swallowing the milk.  And, if your baby is wetting and pooping sufficiently and gaining weight, then you also know.

  3. If your baby is wetting 6-8 diapers a day and gaining weight, you are doing just fine!

  4. To make sure your baby is suckling (extracting milk), not just sucking (gumming them to death), watch for a strong, steady, suck-swallow-breath pattern. You'll notice the rhythmic motion in the baby's jaw, cheek, and ear. Later when your milk come in (because right now you have colostrum), you'll want to listen for the sound of swallowing.  As long as you have 6-8 wet diapers, you should be doing great.

  5. Milk is coming out.  You're not going to be the one woman in history who never had any breast milk.  Expressing a little bit of milk is going to give you your answer.  If you're too scared, call the lactation consultant where you delivered, and she'll reassure you.

  6. Slowly compress the nipple and see. If it comes out then you can see it. If not, its not ready yet. Even try a breast pump and see. you should have one of those anyway for use while feeding. To ensure the breast make enough milk. You might want to check out the web sight.
