How will it turn out if i dye my black hair to purple?

I have natural jet black hair and it's really thin. I want to get a thick purple streak on the right side of my hair, similar to Avril Lavigne and her pink streak on her blonde hair. I don't want to bleach my black hair or anything, I want to keep it black but with that one thick streak of purple on the side.

I like the way it looks in my head, but if i do get it done will it be impossible since my hair is black and will the purple not show up?

It probably won't show up as a bright purple stripe, it will probably only shine purple in the sunlight. You would have to bleach it and then dye it.

Seriously, I have had my hair so many different colors its not even funny. When my hair was black and I wanted a different color, I always had to bleach it first. I use this stuff in a silver box called "super blonde" and it worked really great. Actually I'm about to go get some because I want my hair like the chick from "Perfect Dark Zero" (It's an Xbox 360 game) anyway. You might want to do that before you dye it purple. I did the same thing about a year ago, and my hair looked like a grape. IT WAS AWESOME!!!

Maybe. I know a girl with black hair and she tried to have pink streaks in her hair but her entire head came out purplish. Her hair was too dark for it. Chance it. It could be really nice!

Going from dark to light will always need bleaching and since black is the darkest colour, you'll need to bleach. Sorry, but there's no other way.

it will turn out like a blackish purple, so if you want it really purple, then dye the strip that you want blonde, and then dye that strip purple.  the blonde will make the purple more intense, plus it will last longer that way.

a slight hint of blue in the light if you dont use semi-permanent hair color with the required lotion normally comes in a blue nottle or go to a salon and have them do it

I have seen the black-purple thing before and you can see the purple fine.

Maybe get it done at a salon though.  Don't buy some cheap dye or anything, or it will come out / fade / not show up at all.

Personally, that's not my thing, but if that's what floats your boat, then go for it.
