I am about to drive 4000km over 5 days. I drive a (recently serviced) 2007 mitsubishi lancer sedan. I have water, oil and coolant in case of an emergency. Is it good for my car to do this kind of trip where I will be driving approx 8 hours a day? I am not going to drive like an idiot, just cruise on 110km/h for the majority of the way. I figure if I get a decent sleep each night I should be fine doing this drive. Any advice? other than drinking coffee and/or red bull?

  1. I used to do a lot of long-distance driving... 500+ miles per day for 6-7 days straight.  I found that too much sugar and caffine will actually slow you down after a while.  It's best to have one or two cups of coffee in the morning, then switch to plain water for the rest of the day.  Red Bull may give you wings, but it will also cause you to crash really hard after 5-6 hours.

Loud music inside the car will also make you tired after several hours.  I use an XM Satellite radio, and listen to talk radio as much as I can, to keep my brain engaged.

In most cars, you will have to stop for fuel every 3-4 hours.  Take some time when you stop to walk around a bit and exercise your body.  Also, go for a walk before bed time.  You will sleep better, and wake up more refreshed in the morning.

    Good Luck!

  2. Your car will love it, doing stop start driving isn't very good for the engine, where as long journeys at high speed is much better.

  3. no, buy a ford.. just kidding you'll be fine

  4. Music can help stimulate the brain .

Something loud and upbeat is the best. I personally toss in a Rocky soundtrack c.d., hearing that beat wakes me right up.

Sing along or nod to the beat will help keep you awake during your trip. But beware not all music will keep you awake, soft rock or classical music can actually help you doze off.

So be wise with the chose of music you select and do not rely on the radio for a guaranteed awaking experienced.

Make a mix tape or c.d. ahead of time if you know your going on a long trip or make one as a just in case situation.

Keep the car cold. Warm and comfortable reminds us of our bed.

So keep the car cold by opening the windows or turning on the air conditioning.

The cold weather will help keep your body alert. Anything that will make you uncomfortable will keep you from nodding off.

So keep that temperature chilly in your car to keep you body working hard to keep you warm.

If your body is working hard you will more than likely stay awake.

  5. this is what is called highway miles in the auto world...since car is broke in and that new...it is actually better for it than everyday driving in a local area....just keep a good check on the vitals and tire pressure before you start out each morning...good idea to buy some good injector cleaner also...several bottles...and ad one every other day since you are gonna be fueling up at alot of unfamiliar stations with out being aware of the quality or lack of...the fuel each one sells....you should be fine...

  6. Your car will be fine, thats what their made for, and i would sub Monster for the red bull

  7. its a CAR its what it's supposed to do....run, if you've had everything checked out you should be fine, if in the event that the car overheats, pull over and wait for it to cool off before adding ANY water or coolant (adding cool, coolant, or water to an overheated engine can cause serious damage, which is why it is important that the car cools off completely before adding anything). make sure you're spare tire is in good shape. Other than that enjoy your roadtrip.

  8. Your car will be fine as long as it's got plenty of oil and water. As for you, leave out the caffiene drink. They don't give you real energy, just an artificial boost.
