It depends on the project, and what resources you have available!

Your library probably subscribes to resources that you can't get for free online, and there are a ton of these available. Currently they serve three main functions:

- Reference. These are things like dictionaries and encyclopedias that can help you get basic information or a broad overview of a topic. Many of these are subject-specific, so you can get well-researched and in-depth stuff, as well as bibliographies that will lead you to other resources.

- Indexing and providing access to periodicals and books. This is maybe the most wide-spread use of online resources for researchers, and it's priceless. Most of this is still focused on periodical (journal or magazine) articles, but there are an increasing number of books indexed and available digitally as well. There are thousands of well-researched, well-written articles published a year, and online databases help you find them with keywords, like google, but also with more effective search tools like subject terms and limiters like language, date, item type. When you need scholarly or academic sources for a research project, online databases like Academic Search Complete, JSTOR, and more are the best place to start.

- Providing primary sources. More and more places are digitizing their primary information, and you can get a lot of this online. The government provides a huge number of statistics and other government information online. The Library of Congress is digitizing historical documents from many aspects of American history and making them free online. Databases like Early English Books Online, which require a subscription, provide huge amounts of original material to scholars.

There are numerous databases like Academic OneFile and ERIC where you can access scholarly articles on just about every subject out there.  These articles are great sources for a research paper.
