  1. GPS is just now hitting the mainstream america so many people are now aware of its advantages, but GPS has been known to and used by surveyors since the early 80's. The changes have been very large for some surveyors and very small if non existant for others.

The small shop surveying company may not use GPS or need to use GPS to carry out their daily surveying routines. It doesn't really benefit a surveyor whom is surveying a small lot in a subdivision. The large companies have to use GPS to be competative on larger projects. GPS allows the surveyor to cover larger areas in a shorter amount of time maintaining the same high accuracy standards that the industry requires. It has revolutionized the surveyors control on a nation wide scale but as I mentioned this began over 20 years ago for us.

  2. GPS and satellite based surveying have been a reality for about 10 years now.

The most immediate change was in the speed at which some surveys could be performed over open and accessible terrain.  The second most noticible change was in the size and configuration of the survey teams that supported such surveys.

Future focus seems to be directed toward implementation and coordination of GPS surveys with that of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) .  Thus the location of a roadway or supporting system such as infrastructure or easments or boundary lines can all be mapped and overlaid onto this common data base.

WIth wireless links, the field surveys can then call up prior surveys and build on them or refine them.  In essence this lends new (or no) limits to the word 'field office'.

  3. The future is NOW.  GPS has been part of surveying for many years now.
