Question:

How will the new passport requirements affect me as a Permanent Resident when crossing the Mexican/US border?

I have a Permanent Resident card and travel to Mexico by land frequently and wanted to know how the new document laws will affect me when crossing back to the US after Jan 31, 2008. Do I need to have a Mexican passport with me? Can I use my California ID or my SENTRI card as a second form of proof?

The information online was for Citizens and I could not find what Permanent resident requirements were going to be effective Jan 31, 2008.

Thank you.

  1. If you are a Mexican citizen, you need a Mexican passport, plus your green card.  You actually do not need a passport to cross by LAND yet, but if you have it , use it.  If you do not have one, you will need one in a few months. see site below to read current info on passport requirements.

  2. You need a passport to prove your citizenship, your permanent card has nothing to do with it. If you are Mexican then you need a Mexican passport and your permanent card to enter the USA.
