I am considering getting another Parakeet for my Parakeet. We think the bird we have right now is male. We have had him for about 6 months now. He is not sad or anything, I just want to get another Parakeet. I don't know how he will act though. What should I do?

  1. I would put them in separate cages! They will like the company but may not wish to be together!

  2. if its a budgie them the males nose would be blue and a females would be brown and rough

youll never know if they will like each other unless you get another one

  3. put them in separate cages next to each other for a few days if they look like they are interested in each other put them  together and keep an eye on them, if they like each other keep them together, they might peck each other a little at first but its just to see who is the leader

  4. If you want to get a friend for your little guy and definitely do not want to deal with them mating, you may want to think about getting a different species of bird. Cockatiels and parakeets get along just fine and shouldn't bond as tightly as a pair of mating parakeets would. They will still preen and play with each other but they will not get as attached to each other. You can ask a breeder or pet store which other kinds of birds do well with parakeets too. Whether you get another parakeet or a different kind of bird make sure you keep the new comer quarantined for 30 days(separate cage and room) to make sure it is healthy before placing it with your present bird. The last thing you want to do is get your present bird sick. Keep the cages next to each other for awhile after the quarantine so they can slowly get accustomed to each other and let them play together only when you are right there with them. "Group" playtime is best done in a neutral place away from both cages so your guy wont feel as though he needs to defend his territory. Best of luck!

  5. parakeets are extremely resiliant.  It's best to put them together from the start so they get used to it.  Otherwise, if you have them near each other and then add them together, the first bird will be very territorial and may not tak to it very well.  Either way, the birds will love company.  Budgies are very playful and love having a friend.

  6. Plan on losing the company of your parakeet. It won't take long before they bond with each other. If at all possible put them in a new cage. They need to be in a larger cage than one bird was in. That is unless you had a big cage to start with. No matter what they say at the pet shop they don't need a nest box to sleep in at night.
