Question:

How will this insurance claim work?

I have Mercury insurance and I filed a claim a few months back because my ice maker hose broke and the water leak ruined our hardwood floors. Unfortunately for us, the hardwood is glued down to a slab, which costs a lot to replace.

So the claims adjuster came out and sent his report to Mercury, they sent me a check for $1900 (I have a $1000 deductible).

I went and got some estimates on repairing the problem and the estimates are in the $4000 range, which means that Mercury isn't covering nearly enough. I called them and they gave me the run around.

What is the normal process on something like this? How do I get them to give me more money? I haven't even cashed the original check they sent me a couple months ago. On the claims adjusters form he put that it only costs $1.15/sq ft to pull this stuff up. In actuallity, it costs more to pull it up ($4/ft) than lay new stuff.

  1. You probably should have got the quotes before calling the assessor. That is what they do, assess the damage and put a value on it.

If you had a quote, you could have given him the quotes and he could have either approved them, or given you a percentage of that, based on your level of cover.
