  1. LOL, run a metal detector and look for hearing any familiar beeps...

Or take a sample and grind the entire contents in a fine mixture, then place a magnet on top, and most of the iron components will separate from the mechanical mixture, and "show" itself to you...

Some microscopic matter (even a speck of dust), will also contain iron, but I'm afraid you have t leave taht to the experts...

  2. All soil will contain some trace amount of iron. It might not be in a form that plants can use, and you get plants showing iron deficiency symptoms. If your plants are healthy, you know your soil contains iron because it is a necessary trace element. The most visible signs of iron in the soil are that it is red in color. Red soil has relatively large amounts of iron in it.

  3. You should be able to get a relatively simple self-test kit at a good (read, not Wal Mart or Home Depot) nursery.  If not, they can give you details on how to get it tested by your county agricultural extension.

  4. I don't know any other way than to test the soil.  You can do this by taking a sample to your County Extension Agent, or you can obtain a do-it-yourself testing kit from most of the seed catalogs, such as Burpee's or Park Seed Co.  I've done both.

  5. The soil test is the best way, but since you are not going there, know this, all soil will contain some trace amount of iron.  It might not be in a form that plants can use, and you get plants showing iron deficiency symptoms.  If your plants are healthy, you know your soil contains iron because it is a necessary trace element.  The most visible signs of iron in the soil is soil that is red in color.  Red soil has relatively large amounts of iron in it.

  6. it's red to red-orange in color.

  7. The soil will have red spots or be totally red from the oxydation of the iron by water.  It will have a rusty colour when your dig and get the soil profile.
