Hi I am so excited about my new bike- a giant OCR costing 1700 dollars. It's a road bike so it's pretty fast commute. Problem is, is it wise to commute to college? I'm going to use 2 u locks on it and tape around the seatpost and stem. I'm leary of theft though (d**n!)

  1. No matter where you lock  it or with what lock you are always at risk of getting it stolen.  My fiance's bike was stolen from our locked back yard and it was locked up with one of those supposedly unbreakable brands of the U-locks.

  2. It's a lot cheaper than driving!!! woth the chance in my opinion.

  3. Second day of class during my Freshman year, my roommate locked up his $2000 bike on campus and went off to the lecture hall.  He returns 1 hour later to find the wheels and seatpost gone.

When you are rushing to class, you don't have time to mess with the quick-release or seatpost.  For riding around campus, I would just buy a $100 beater bike that no thief would bother to hit.  Save your $1700 bike for nice long weekend rides.

  4. Buy a kryptonite lock, they are expensive but have a guarantee against theft. Depending on which one you buy, the guarantee is 2000+ $.

They are more expensive compared to other brands but worth it.
