The human brain is very related to special education, and much of the current research in brain-based learning also focuses on how the brains in children with special needs functions differently than those in "normal" learners. There really is so much out there that to answer how the human brain works in a quick answer on "Answers" is impossible. You may want to check out the writings of Eric Jensen--he is very good at summarizing brain research in the area of learning. Two of my favorite books he has published is Super Teaching and Different Brains, Different Learners.
