Question:

How worth it is it to go to Hong Kong?

I have to decide my flights. With the rates I've gotten I can either fly to hong kong and stay for a couple days... and then only get 14 days exactly in vietnam but save a hundred dollars. Or I can fly straight to Vietnam, it'll cost a hundred dollars more and I wont get to go to HK unless I go by bus/train and cross the boarder just to see HK and then go back to vietnam with more like 3 some weeks to travel around vietnam.

With only 2 weeks exactly (going from HK), or with about 3 some weeks (going directly to Saigon) either way, I have to fly in and out of Saigon, which means I have to make it up to Hanoi and back within that time. What would you do? Vietnam is my priority, how worth it do you think it is to include Hong Kong?

Please help :)

  1. what makes Hongkong worth your time & budget???? its DISNEYLAND & ladies market in mongkok... (think it twice!)

  2. I've never been to Vietnam, so it's hard to make the trade off.

I went to Hong Kong once on business and was there for two days and three nights.  But since I was working, I didn't get to do much tourism.  I found it interesting to walk through the shopping districts, eat food.  My hosts took me to Victoria Peak and I had a hotel overlooking Victoria park.

I did a quick Yahoo Search for:

    Hong Kong

and I found this Lonely Planet guide to Hong Kong.  I've liked lonely planet books in the past and the quick overview summed up some of my memories of Hong Kong quite well.  Give it a read and it may help with your decision.

  3. I would spend no more than 2 days in Hong Kong for shopping...etc..  Then the rest of the time in Vietnam.  By the way you should be able to take a domestic flight from Saigon to Hanoi to save time.  Not sure on the cost though - should be cheap.  I love Vietnam!!

  4. You can not compare Hong Kong to Vietnam.  It's like two different worlds.  Hong Kong is more modern and you will probably feel more comfortable there.  Everything will cost you more in Hong Kong.  Don't expect any bargains.  In contrast, Vietnam is hot and humid, and the streets are very crowded and chaotic.  If you don't speak Vietnamese,  go to places without an interpreter can be a challenge.  Most businesses there jack up the prices for tourists, so ask how much first before you receive any services.
