How would I begin to make a PHP/MySQL/AJAX chat?

I have seen a few tutorials, but I don't know exactly how I should start it off... I am decent in PHP/SQL but i'm sort of new to AJAX. Though, I didn't want to make a chat in php/mysql because the only (good) way would be to use frames and that causes it to refresh ALOT and eat up bandwidth. So for a multi-room chat (where uses can go from room to room and make their own rooms), how would I start?
