I am needing to build a shed in my backyard. The problem is that my subdivision requires it to be joined to the house. I am concerned that if I join it to the house the rain would get in through nail holes and so forth. How would I do this?

  1. At a builder's supply house they sell caulking that comes in a roll. It is a coiled strip about 1/8 " thick by 1/2" wide with a paper backing on one side. You press it into place and peal the paper off. I would use this behind all the members that attach to the house. I would not disturb the wall of the house any more than necessary. After the shed is complete, I would caulk all the edges where it meets the house again, using a silicone sealant.

By using 2 sealants, I believe that the problem of leaking is solved. The silicone is paintable when dry. The point of most problem would be where the roof of the shed attaches to the house. A flashing could be used over the roofing material and again, sealed with silicone.

I don't think it should be a problem, as for the rain going into the holes, as long as you cover them. You can use shingles, set them up to guide the water down the side of the home.

Also, you can think like an "attached car garage". There's the house, which has a walkway that leads to the garage (or in your case - shed), the the walkway has a roof. You could also make this a "sun/mud room" - just screen it in(?). I think that sounds good.
