I am visiting a friends and empty a ash tray in a plastic bag then found out the bag had a whole in it. I vacuumed up the ashes but they left a black stain on the carpet. Any suggestions on how the get this stain out of the carpet.

Thank You

  1. try this  "wasn't me"

  2. Try mixing a solution of 1 part white or apple vinegar to 2 parts water.  You shouldn't need a whole lot (depending on the size of the stain): 1/2 cup vinegar :: 1 cup of water.  Use a sponge to soak the stain in this solution, let sit for 1 minute, then press a towel into the area to absorb the vinegar.

I've used this to get ashes AND red wine out of white carpeting.  Any residual stains should come out with a cheap commercial carpet cleaner that your friends probably have under the sink or something.  If not, they're available at any grocery/convenience store.
