Question:

How would I connect this surround sound system?

I have a very good quality speaker that accepts a 3.5mm jack (As normal speakers do) which is on the left hand side of my room - the TV is on the right.

I would like to know if I can connect the TV to the speaker, so that the left sound goes to the speaker, and the right sounds stays at the TV.

Is it just a matter of plugging the speakers into the Left "Audio Out" cable with an adapter, or will it not work?

All answers are really appreciated - Thanks in advance!

  1. First of all, this wouldn't be surround sound, it would be marginally better than mono. Why would you want to have good quality sound on one side, but not the other? This is, in effect much like trading in your HDTV for a 15 inch cathode ray tube.  Also, the speakers you have are active, which means they have an inbuilt amp.  You could take a phono to jack from the Left (white) audio out from your tv, and the speaker would amplify it just fine, but i wouldn't bother if i were you.

    If i were you i'd either;

    A) Stick with your TVs original sound

    B) Get a surround sound system

    C) Do what i do and get a decent pair of headphones to use whilst watching movies.

  2. In short, no it wouldn't work. The audio out jacks from the TV need an amp to power any speakers attached to them. If you could isloate the left channel to an external speaker, the need for an amp would throw the balance out so much, it would leave the right channel almost inaudible.

  3. I hate to disillusion you, but you do NOT have a "very good quality speaker".

    Most normal speakers have bare wire or banana plug connections.  It's only the very cheap and nasty PC type speakers that use a 3.5mm jack.
