  1. First, you need to become a great dancer and yes i guess you need qualifications ^D^.

  2. If you're really serious about being a choreographer, it's useful to have a background as a dancer, but don't think of choreography as second best to performing. It requires a whole different range of skills, including an ability to be creative and imaginative, particularly under pressure. It's also extremely competitive: a dance piece can have a lot of dancers, but only one or possibly two choreographers.

If you think your original movement ideas will be the ones to cut it, build on them with a proper dance education. If you don't already have Dance or Performing Arts GCSE and A Level or BTEC, think about a foundation/access course to top up your skills. Find a college in your area: even if you want to be a choreographer, bear in mind that colleges will require you to keep dancing and probably performing as part of your course.

The next step is to do a dance degree. Depending on your chosen style, decide which college is the most suitable for you. Government funding, which pays the majority of the fees, is now available to study at some of these institutions. When you apply, ask about the Dance and Drama Award Scheme. You can keep learning in choreography right through to PhD level i.e. you can become a Doctor of Choreography! It's up to you to decide how far you want to go.

One thing which will help getting into any of these courses and getting a foot in the door, is experience. To see if choreography is what really interests you, arrange some work experience with a dance company or choreographer that you admire. Also keep choreographing and getting your ideas out there in showcases and platforms you'll soon realize if all the effort is worth it.
