How would I go about dyeing the underside of my head?

I have medium length hair with lots of layers. It's a combination of an orange, brown, and blond (my natural color), And I am dyeing the underside a very dark brown color.

How do I keep the part I don't want dyed from getting the dye on it? Is foil the way to go or is just pulling the top up in a pony?

I would go to a salon but it is not an option. Plus school is starting and they don't really have any openings.

To dye the underside, get someone (maybe your mom) to help you... part your hair across the back where you want the different color to start, then pin up the top section of your hair, and have your mom carefully apply the color to the bottom section of your hair. Foil might help also so the color doesn't dye unwanted areas.
