I want to get involved with cycling in the Philadelphia area...what would be a good bike to start out with that is affordable (not more than $500)? And how would I go about getting into the whole cycling community? Are there websites or clubs or amateur races? Something along those lines? Any suggestions would help.

  1. You should visit several bike shops in the area.  Just like car dealerships, no two are the same and service/comfort level varies from store to store.  Try to go during the week to avoid the weekend hubbub.  Never buy on the first visit; a bike is a long-term investment.

The kind of bike you need depends on how you ride.  If you are gonna be riding around town and on trails and such, a hybrid bike may be the ticket.  If you plan to take some dirt paths and/or are interested in mountain biking, then of course you'll need a mountain bike.  A good bike shop will show you what's available in your price range.

  2. Use your browser and search for bicycle clubs in your area. Go to say four of your nearest bicycle shops and ask THEM where the groups are, what kinds of groups they are, and where a newbie (you) should start. There are websites, blogs and all that, galore. GET A HELMET. :) The bike is not the only outlay, you will need cycling shorts, shoes, (that helmet) and I would recommend padded cycling gloves. Philly gets cold in winter, so you will during fall go out and get wet weather gear. And then, find a MAP and where your cycling lanes or paths are. And then, get out there and start. That is the only way.

If you have friends who could be into it, rope them in, and get a group going.

    :)

    Go for it.
