Question:

How would I go about installing a lock on my bedroom door?

I have a sister who steals absolutely everything she can from me: clothes, deodorant, movies, shoes, etc. You name it, she's taken it from me.

I have decided that I cannot take it anymore. I would like to install a lock (preferably key-opened) on my bedroom door. I am not terribly handy, so I would love for it not to be overly-complicated. I would love basic instructions/ideas, materials and where to get them, and maybe an estimate of how difficult this will be.

Thanks to everyone who tries to help with my pest problem.

  1. go to a hardware store and but a new k**b with a lock on it you can get them like 10.00 and higher.

  2. you can go to the hardware store and get a new door k**b

with a key lock in it just like your house entry door. just as easy as putting a hasp and pad lock on the door

  3. I had to do that cuz of my roommate.  Basically, just go to Lowes or Home Depot and go to the door k**b section.  They'll have a ton of doorknobs...some with locks and some without.  Some are really expensive and some aren't.  Mine was about $15.  It comes with the keys and also instructions.  Basically just look at your doorknob.  You'll see two screws on each side of the k**b.  Get a s***w driver and unscrew them and then pull each side of the doorknob off.  Then look on your door frame and you'll see a metal plate thing unscrew and take that off as you will have a new one with the new doorknob.  Then you pretty much just put the new doorknob on the opposite way that you took the old one off.

  4. You can go to this web sight as they have step by step instructions. The sight is: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/dr_repair/...

    Hope this helps

  5. Go buy a lock, for 20-40 at the hardware store. Have someone else install it, or follow the directions. Usually takes about a half hour. Good luck!

  6. you should go down to a local hardware store.. they sell them in little kits (at most you might need a s***w driver).. they're really easy to install, especially with the directions (lol)

Just get one that's a key lock in a door k**b, that way you just remove your door k**b and replace it with the one that locks.. they're usually only ten or twenty bucks for a simple one..

To remove a lock, you will need the following tools. Regular s***w driver and a phillips s***w driver.

On the front of the lock facing the hallway or where ever, you will find 2 Usually brass screws. You may have to turn the head of the  lock one way or the other slightly so that both screws are exposed. Remove the two screws and the 2 halves of the lock should split apart and then, you can remove  2 more screws that keep the inter piece of the lock in place. After you have removed all of the componets, you can go to a hardware store and purchase a door lock, either with a key, or they also have key less locks. Always remember if you use a keyless lock, install the lock handle with the rotating  lock on  the bedromm side of the door. The other side of the lock will have a small hole that you can use a coat hanger or even a long nail to open the lock and to get in the room.

Now just read the directions and try to do all that you did to get the existing lock out, and just reinstall in reverse order. The first time you do it take your time, so that you don't get frustrated, because it is actually very easy to do.

And this should answer your ? for you.

    Good Luck
