I want to look up a closed police case but I have no idea where to start? Any ideas are appreciated.

  1. In Canada you would need to make a request through your provincial FOIP access point.


  2. Due to public records laws in all states (based on the federal "Freedom of Information Act of 1966") all of these records are available to you for the asking. Depending on what state you're in, in most cases they cannot ask you your personal information or WHY you want the records. They may charge you a small fee for the copies of the paperwork. Just go to the records clerk of whatever agency took the report.

    The other most common question people ask is how they can find out about police actions, where cars, boats, guns, etc. are sold very cheap. Here's a good link for that:

  3. The previous answer is not completely accurate. If the case is still under investigation or involves a minor you may be denied access. Cases can be open forever if unsolved. If the case was filed with the court in your county you can get the case and read it at your county superior court. Again, cases involving a minor you will not have access to.
