How would I go about making a search engine to find people that live around me? I'm trying to make a myspace sorta friend search thingy.

You are thinking big. You won't have any luck starting a search without tons of money.  You better concentrate on the next Facebook.  But what would it be?  Where people get hired online to work overseas? /
