How would I go about obtaining dual citizenship between the US and Canada?

I am a US Citizen married to a Canadian citizen. I would like to live in Canada with him but I do not wish to renounce my US citizenship in case something were to happen to him, I would have to option to move back to the US where all my family are.

You will NOT lose your US citizenshop. USA DOES allow dual citizenship as does Canada.

Your Canadian spouse must apply for PR status for you.

If you choose to stay in Canada while this is being processed, then be aware that YOU will NOT be allowed to work for up to 12 months while the application is being processed to the first stage. Your Canadian spouse MUST be supporting you. You can volunteer but ONLY with a non-profit company.

Once you pass the first stage, then you can apply for a work permit and start working again. When you are eventually landed as a permanent resident, then you can apply for a permanent SIN number (instead of the temporary one you have on a work permit) and are free to live however you choose in Canada.  

In the meantime until you get the work permit, you MUST reapply and renew your visitor status every 6 months (sometimes they give you 12 months). Once you get the work permit, you must renew it every year - but in most cases you are landed before the first one expires.

I know all this because I went through an inside application.

this will explain how to get Canadian citizenship. Once you get Canadian citizenship you have dual citizenship! Don't renounce your US citizenship! Both countries allow dual citizenship.
