My paternal father has this condition,he had a heart attack with no symptoms at the age of 54 (non smoker, healthy lifestyle) My paternal grandfather (my fathers father) had a fatal heart attack at the age of 54. I have been tested for cholesterol and was found to have a slightly high cholesterol level for my age and s*x(I'm female) and my triglyceride count was very high (tested 5 years ago). I was never told if I have the condition, where do I go from here?

Was given a diet sheet, nothing else.

  1. Things have come a long way in 5 years! Time for you to go back to a doctor and start some blood test! and soon!!!

    Good Luck

  2. The chances of you having familial hypercholesterolaemia is 50% given your father has it. The only definitive test is a genetic one not routinely done, although there are clinical clues, such as the level of your lipids (fats), along with some signs such as fat streaks in your eyes, or around your eyes, and fat deposits on tendons. If you're not clear, I would suggest seeing your doctor again for another check. Triglycerides are affected by food and alcohol, and another fasting level is recommended for you.

  3. Familial hypercholesterolaemia is one cause of high cholesterol. It is an inherited illness. You need to get your GP to order blood tests at least once a year. Have you told your doctor about the family history? The high triglyceride count is quite worrying. High cholesterol etc is a major cause of heart attacks - act now, but don't panic!

  4.   go back and ask your doctor who did your test if the test was 5yrs ago you need new one done anyway.insist on knowing
