How would I locate a divorce certificate from 45 years ago?

My father would like me to locate this for him and I do not know how. Where do I begin looking?

It depends a good deal of the state law in whatever state they got divorced.  However, generally speaking, you'd need to figure out where they filed for divorce (usually, but not always where they were living at the time), and contact the County Clerk of said county.  Generally, divorce and marriage records are public, and you should be able to obtain a copy of the whole case file, or just the decree of Divorce for a fairly minimal fee.
