Question:

How would I quote a journal article?

I want to use a quote that the journal article author has already cited in

his work as someone else's. I would just put (Dr. Seuss, 1965: 165) and

just follow what he had already in his article's body and reference? or would I have to also

cite himself since he FOUND it and did all the work to locate the quote?

I'm just trying to find out if I have to also cite the person that

quoted it in the journal article in ADDITION to the original person. So i would have two cites on one quote

(Dr. Seuss, 1965: 165, Hallstone, 2008: 155) <--- Like this?

One is from the original person and the second is the person that wrote the journal article and placed it in his paper which I am then going to quote. So would I give him credit also in the direct quote? or would I just give him credit in the reference page?

Another question:

Would I also just copy his references and place them in mine since he already has all the citing information in his paper?

  1. If you're using MLA citations.

[quoted from page 241 of Faigley]

A Source Quoted in Another Source

When you do not have access to the original source of the material you wish to use and only an indirect source is available, put the abbreviation “qtd. in” (quoted in) before the information about the indirect source.

    [Example]

National Governments have become increasingly what Ulrich Beck, in a 1999 interview, calls “zombie institutions” – institutions which are “dead and still alive” (qtd. in Bauman 6).

    [end quote]

If you are using APA style, page 283 of Faigley says: "Name the work and give a citation for the secondary source."

    [example]

Saunders and Kellman's study (as cited in McTee, Luhan, Stiles, & Buell, 1994)

    [end example]

Faigley makes it clear that one should use original sources whenever possible.

Other styles probably have something similar.

    I hope this helps!
