How would I find the equivalent of the name "George" in Romanian? A man named George Nicolici built my house in 1916 and ran a pool hall out of my garage during Prohibition. A man came into the local historical center with a token from the pool hall but wouldn't sell it. He turns up on Ancestry.com only in my house in 1920 then disappears.

I don't feel like Googling the answer right now because I am trying to run a scanner so i thought I'd ask here for any insight on the name George Nicolici.

  1. It's the same George

  2. it's George or Gheorghe

  3. Ellis Island has the following:

Giogio Nicolich from Triest (actually 3 different men by that name from the Triest region)

    Giuro Nicolich from Niksic

    Georgio Nicolitza  from  Megara

    Jure Nicolic  from  Metkovie

    Jlija Nicolich  from  Ljoubotiny

The final letter in Romanian names was usually not pronounced, so when documents were created from questions asked verbally, the final letter was often left off. (Think Nadia Comenichi...it's pronounced "Comeneech")

Also, Romania wasn't a country until after WWI. So he could be listed in earlier records as an Austrian, Hungarian, Turk or Serbian.

  4. These are Romanian alternative spellings for George :-

    Georg, George, Georges, Gheorghe
