I have been thinking of getting involved in theatre for a while now. I just do not know how to start. I am not much of a singer but I did really well in drama in high school. I am 19 and in college.... am I too old to get involved? Also, are auditions really nerve racking? I really need something that can occupy my time when I am not in school.

  1. When I started in college I was determined to be an actor.  Just an actor.  I sneered at the fact of doing stage craft or working behind the scenes.  For some odd reason that began to change and I enjoyed being on the creative and behind the scenes side much more.  In your college town there has to be some community theatres around.  Community theatre's are always looking for backstage help.  When you help backstage you get to know the directors and other actors.  You will become connected.  Look up the community theatres online, check out their websites, email the theatre and/or call and tell them you want to get involved.

  2. you're never too old to start, especially in community theatre.

check the web and phone book for local theatres. talk to them to find out when auditions are coming up and what's they're going to perform.

auditions can be scary, just remember, in a community theatre people are there to have fun, it's not like american idol in which you have to face Simon and possibly some really nasty remarks. just relax and have fun with it

even if you don't get an acting part I'd recommend volunteering to help out in the production. great way to meet new people and you'll get more experience with the theatre group
