How would I start off an essay analyzing a poem throught Maya angelou's eyes?

The poem is Barbie doll by Marge piercy

and I'm suppose to analyze it through Maya 's eyes during 'I know why the caged bird sings' when Maya wanted to be white because during this time "white was right" and "black was wrong"

Do a parallel analysis.  Start with a brief discussion of what made Maya Angelou write what she wrote about white being the right/preferable skin color.  Then, analyze what made the woman in Barbie Doll want to be white.  Some possible themes are racism in general, beauty standards, body image issues, how some girls/women/minorities try to change themselves in hopes of getting accepted by others, and how hopeless/meaningless are the attempts to change oneself to be accepted by others.
