How would I travel to brighton?

Question

I need to go to brighton on a weekday. In the rush hour. And it will by train.

How would you propose that I get there, avoiding London (becasue that costs more - £10 more) and departing from Basingstoke.

Quickest way is to change at clapham junction, alternatively you could change at Fareham or Fratton in Portsmouth. Another route is to change at Farnborough, walk to Farnoborough North and then change at Gatwick.

From basingstoke avoiding London. Well the easiest is Basingstoke - Clapham Junction - Brighton, or you could go Basingstoke - Southampton - Brighton but thats a more expensive and longer journey, another option would be if you are prepared to take time, Basingstoke - Reading - Redhill / Gatwick Airport (Depending on service) - Brighton, or Basingstoke - Eastleigh - Fratton - Brighton.

Basingstoke to Portsmouth 1 train per hour then Portsmouth to Brighton 2 trains per hour.

The best website for this is the National Rail Enquiries website at http://nationalrail.co.uk/ . Allows you to not only plan your journey but will show all the fare options open to you. If you do the advanced search you can ask to avoid certain stations. I did a quick look and the answer appears to be Fareham but it will take you about 2 hours.

I would think  Southampton and one of the South Coast services   not  done those lines in yonks or can you get to Portsmouth more services from there along the coast

Change at Reading to the Redhill line, change at Redhill for Brighton. It will take a lot longer but if you want to pay less?
