Question:

How would I wire up an old Sturmey-Archer Dynohub?

I have just aquired a vintage Raleigh Roadster fitted with a Dynohub in the rear wheel. I would like to get it operational, and have fitted the lights required. However, I do not know how you would wire it up, as both the front and rear lights have had their old cables cut. Do the terminals on the hub have positive on both terminals, with negative running through the axle, or is it negative on one terminal and positive on the other? Also, when wired correctly, does the switch on the front control both the front and rear lights or only the front? Any advice would be useful. Thank you.

  1. The picture was very impressive. I forgot to read the question man....I'm sorry.

  2. Um, you pose ANOTHER interesting question. Since I know you like detail I'll try to be as thorough as I can... or perhaps not.

The Dynohub has 2 contacts: one is + and one is -. The wires coming from the lamp may be attached either way. Regarding earthing, both the lamp and the hub are earthed through the connections made with the frame. All 3 of these connections are essential for operation.

There is also a possibility that you have a unit that includes a filter switch. I have never rebuilt one of these.
