Question:

How would YOU extend the UK motorway network?

I've often thought how much easier it would be to get from A to B in the UK if there were more motorways.

I myself live in Wrexham, North Wales.

In a dream world, If the government had no budget to extend the road network, here's my ideas:

Build new motorways for the following areas:

Between say, Colwyn Bay in North Wales and Cardiff in South Wales.

Between Carlisle and Newcastle Upon Tyne (extend the A69 to a motorway).

If it was possible, as the Peak District is in the way, between Stockport and Sheffield.

Between Stoke-On-Trent, Derby and Nottingham.

Between Cannock, Tamworth and Leicester. This could even be extended into Peterborough and Norwich.

Between Exeter and Southampton.

Build an extension of the M5 down to Plymouth.

I don't know if all these motorways are necessary as I don't do much driving.

I'm simply just looking at a UK road atlas book and seeing where it looks like a motorway could be useful.

Any other thoughts & ideas are welcome.

  1. East / West road for sure.

The problem is, how will it all end?

You could have road after road after road!  We have to change our way of life if you ask me.  Start to think about taking jobs closer to our homes.  Do more work from home. Share cars or use good public transport.  Trams are a good idea but would require vast investment by the government.

No easy fix, but it has to start, and soon.

I am not an environmental nutter, but even i can see that our way of lift is unsustainable.

  2. Make a few more EAST-West ROADS

the A14 A47 and A27 all need to be motorway and that would cover almost all of your comments!

  3. I wouldn't.

As i see it there are two problems.

    A)  Lorries

    B) People sitting oblivous in lanes when not overtaking.

If....... there were trains running the backbone of the country that took cars and trucks like the channel link it would ease the motorway traffic hugely.  It's must be priced right obviously but if you could ship your frieght up north on a lorry, on a train, the driver will get his sleep and the frieght won't be held up by congestion.  As someone that travels a lot round the uk, I need a car for most of the journeys, however if i could stick the car on a train at London, (or outside) and drive off at leeds, I could sleep or work the way up and do the short hops and journeys in the car.

A network like this would take a lot of traffic off our motorways.

As for point B.  Nothing you can do about middle lane drivers.  There's idiots everywhere.

  4. A fixed link between Britain and Ireland.

  5. the stockport to sheffield is a must and a few more would be desirable. the easiest way to build them would be to extend ALL existing motorways into 6 lanes (7including the hard shoulder )all new ones the same ,and this could be done for next to nothing if the road tax was for roads the speeding and other motoring offences fines were used along with road tolls and congestion charges ,we also have a full prison population to help with the work,so we could have a motorway network to be the envy of the world. But alas it will never happen because the powers that be are Permanently Blinkered

  6. Yous hould have a six lane motorway 6 each = 12 in total - going all the way up the Britsih isles then have no speed limits on the two outer lanes... follow suit!

  7. I wouldnt
