With skyrocketing gas prices, airlines charging for water, and cheese at the grocery store for over six dollars, the United States isn't exactly headed for a promising future right now.

  1. They would have to quit sniffing gas....drink beer instead of water...and cut back on the cheese doodles.

  2. During the last depression, teams in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, St. Louis, New York (Americans) and Montreal (Maroons) folded. Each of the surviving teams won at least one Stanley Cup and the Montreal Canadiens were given preffered status in Quebec.

If a repeat were to happen maybe the league would right size again to 24 teams and parity might result. But I don't see any specials for the Canadiens this time.

  3. it might a little bit

  4. Cheese-- SIX BUCKS!!!!   The Preds are screwed... Dan Ellis lives on Cheetos..

But the gasoline bit is all to true.. I totaled all my gas expenses for the year and was floored.. Over 6 G (so far) .. I bet Nips tab is even further ahead.. It will definitely have impact on the fanbases living over 45 mins away .. A round trip last year was about $300 +/- per night for 4 people.. I can only imagine what this season will have in store.. Myself--  may only attend about 25 or so games this time..

BTW-- We're IN a depression..  Wings won the dang cup.. Now we gotta listen to Nips, RWQueen, Vinny, Wings fan , Dirt and the Fat Russian rub it in our faces.. And theres not too much we can do "aboot" it..

    jk Wingers..

  5. You people are idiots.. the country in a depression? god you people aren't happy unless you are over sensationalizing everything to gloom and doom. In a hockey section of all places...

  6. Working in the Mortgage Business, I can tell you guys first hand that we are in a recession right now which is only a few steps from a depression. Just like anything else though, those who want to get to the games will, but most will watch at home. Most Arenas offer affordable seats in the upper levels. Most of the "High rollers" in the arena are not at all effected by this lack of the US dollar. And they are the season ticket holders and corporate powerhouses that bring the teams most of there revenue. Bottom line, Live hockey games may once again become a rich mans sport, at least in the lower levels.

Just like any other business that is lacking sales it is up to marketing to solve the issue and discounted ticket prices may be the answer.

  7. Just like during the Great Depression, I am sure many teams would fold.

BTW: Tbl, you know you are starting one of those annoying political debates in the hockey section.  Everybody is going to compare Bettman to Bush, and complain about the war, and whatnot...shame on you ;P.

  8. Well as everyone mentioned teams would fold. Attendance in the NHL would decrease and the Leafs would win their first Stanley Cup since 1967!

  9. You forgot aboot Global Warming...C'mon everyone I'll meet you at the Golden Gate Bridge so we can all end it quickly..

  10. back to the O-6?

no it won't be that bad, but it would be a similar out come.
