I'm an English teacher, but from what I have observed, the science fair is a big deal.  Teachers usually start prepping the kids months ahead of time.  I would think they would send a handout home to a parent, explaining the timeline, expectations, important dates, etc.

I mention the Science fair on day 1.

Its a big thing at my school. I don't like those cookie cutter experiments that most kids try and find - It has to be  a true experiement where they are really investigating something we dont know the answer to.

I have rubrics I introduce, and spend quite a bit of time teaching the difference between an experiment and a demonstration. I allow the students to brainstorm cool ideas that they would like to investigate - and I 'push"them towards an interesting question they could look at. (It really depends entirely on the stuff at hand) We have some local waterways that I have students do some water testing - but often Im stumped on how to guide them towards a good experiment.

It helps to have a good department to brainstorm with.
