Hi, I am visiting Taiwan this coming winter break with my gf, and I was wondering what they would think of me, as I am a mainlander?

  1. um.....careful with political wording when your in Taiwan....

The majority don't like mainlanders. Naturally because your country tried to invade us. Treat everyone with respect, don't say political views and you'll be fine.

  2. I agree with kliu0. You don't want to offend anyone with any political views. Don't crack any jokes about Taiwan/China, and stay out of debates, heated discussions, etc.

If you don't shout, "I'm a mainlander!" in the middle of the street, no one will know.

    Have fun in Taiwan!

  3. I disagree  with both previous answers.  Most, in fact the majority of, people in Taiwan are able to differentiate between the government of a foreign nation and people who are from there.  I heard little if any disdain or hatred or even dislike of Mainlanders during my years in Taiwan.

It's too bad that many Canadians do not seem able to differentiate between the US government, and American people.

I not only hope that the people of Taiwan will make you as welcome as they did me--I am sure that they will.  There will be no need to conceal your nationality.
