How would deflection be used in mini golf (putt putt golf)?

This is for a science project i dont understand what deflection is. i need to state how it is used in a mini golf hole.

In physics deflection is the event where an object collides and bounces against a plane surface. So, if you were to hit the wall so the ball would bounce into the hole. This isn't a very good example of it though. And shouldn't you know what deflection is if it's your own science project?
